LEBANON, Conn. (WCBS 880) Louis Goffinet just wants to help people.
In the early months of the pandemic, the 27-year-old middle school teacher from Lebanon, Connecticut volunteered to go grocery shopping for his elderly neighbors.
Then he started a Facebook fundraiser that raised over $40,000. Which was all spent back in the community groceries for families, we paid off some families’ utility bills, some outstanding rent payments, Goffinet said.
When he went to file his taxes this year, he received a 1099-K tax form from the Internal Revenue Service. Turns out his charitable work was mistakenly listed as taxable income and Goffinet was told that he owed the government $16,000.
