LEBANON, Conn. (WCBS 880) — Louis Goffinet just wants to help people.
In the early months of the pandemic, the 27-year-old middle school teacher from Lebanon, Connecticut volunteered to go grocery shopping for his elderly neighbors.
Then he started a Facebook fundraiser that raised over $40,000.
"Which was all spent back in the community — groceries for families, we paid off some families’ utility bills, some outstanding rent payments," Goffinet said.
When he went to file his taxes this year, he received a 1099-K tax form from the Internal Revenue Service. Turns out his charitable work was mistakenly listed as taxable income and Goffinet was told that he owed the government $16,000.
