Historical Commission and Historical Society members gathered at the Swampscott Lilac Garden on Monument Avenue Wednesday afternoon to dedicate the new Deborah Moody Lilac Garden interactive sign to the late Swampscott historian Louie Gallo.Surrounded by more than 67 different varieties of vibrant lilac trees, a new sign tells two different stories one of a trailblazing woman from colonial Swampscott , and the other about the historian who unearthed her story.

Louie Gallo, beloved historian to Swampscott residents, dies at 78 Native recalled for his contagious passion for and love of the town Wicked Local Louie Gallo, an erudite and passionate Swampscott historian whose encyclopedic knowledge of town history made him a local fixture, died in a house fire in Saugus on Saturday morning.  He was 78. “Considered our town historian, he was a fountain of knowledge, a well-known, well-respected and larger-than-life character,” Angela Warren Ippolito, a former Swampscott Historical Commission member, told The Swampscott Reporter on Sunday morning. “He was my friend and colleague for many years, and I am devastated that he was a victim of such a tragedy.

Elderly siblings die in Saugus housefire By WCVB First responders are investigating a house fire that started early Saturday morning in Saugus and left two elderly siblings dead, according to the Advertiser s news partner WCVB. Saugus Deputy Fire Chief Tom D Eon Jr. said crews received a call about the fire at 16 Richard St. at approximately 5:40 a.m. Fire crews encountered heavy flames on the front porch when they arrived at the home and received reports that two elderly people were trapped inside, according to D Eon. D Eon said one of the victims, who was found on the first floor at the front of the home, died in the fire.
