DCA: Discussion On Asylum System, Short Biographies On New Mexico Farmers, Return Of Science Story Time… DCA News: Explore the latest online programming from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), bringing the state’s unique blend of cultures into your home through its museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions. This week includes three programs: The History and Literary Arts department at the National Hispanic Cultural Center presents the latest online lecture in the series Perspectivas Modernas “Seeking Refuge: The Role of Expert Witnesses in Latin American Asylum Cases” via Zoom May 4. In this presentation, Kimberly Gauderman, a professor in the Department of History at the University of New Mexico, offers a description of the asylum system in the United States and the role of expert witnesses in cases for refugees from Latin America, focusing on the specific challenges faced by women and LGBTQ persons. Tony J Sanchez

    Mr. Sanchez was born to Antonio Geronimo and Lydia Sanchez on May 9, 1954.     He was a member of the St. John the Baptist Parish and was a member of the San Juan de los Caballeros Council at Ohkay Owingeh, a fourth degree Knight at the Arroyo Seco Assembly, an associate member of St. John the Baptist St. Vincent de Paul Society, a member of Local Union #16.     Mr. Sanchez was a laborer foreman by trade and began his construction career with Saunders Construction, then transitioned to Davis & Associates. He worked construction over 45 years.     After retiring, he worked as a security escort for Compa Industries, escorting visitors at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He retired from Compa Industries in 2009 to dedicate his time to his cattle and ranch operations.

LAHS Announces New Course On Life And Literature Of New Mexico

Embeds learning everywhere and views the community as a classroom. Is centered on individual learners. Is inquiry-based to help students develop an understanding of their place in the world. Incorporates local and global thinking and investigations. Requires design thinking to find solutions to authentic problems. Is interdisciplinary. “While some of the courses offered at LAHS, like AP Human Geography, Native American Studies, and New Mexico History, explore the ideas of place, we offer no yearlong core courses at LAHS that utilize inquiry-based and place-based learning,” said Batha. “Students who enroll in this class will explore course materials that focus on the language and culture of New Mexico and the connections around the globe.”

LAHS Introduces New Course Offering For 2021-2022 LAPS News: With course selection opening for Los Alamos High School students, upcoming juniors and seniors will have another option to fulfill their English credit requirement toward graduation. English teachers Margo Batha and Suzanne Montoya have partnered to teach Southwest Narratives: Life and Literature of New Mexico.  Click here to view the video that Montoya created to promote this new course offering. “Mrs. Montoya and I believe in the power of place-based learning and community-based education for our students,” Batha said. “We want to offer juniors and seniors at Los Alamos High School another choice for their English requirement that uses their experiences and our community in Northern New Mexico as part of their learning.”
