good morning, and welcome to our continuing live coverage of king charles iii s journey around the united kingdom. today the king and continue his tour, visiting northern ireland. there he will acknowledge the tributes paid to his mother and attend a service of reflection for the life of queen elizabeth ii. a busy day lies ahead for the new king. first this morning, he will fly into northern ireland s capital where he will land at george best city airport and it is there where the river lagan meets belfast lough, that he will take his historic first historic steps in the country as king. it is in the shadow of the famous ship building, the giant cranes, sansome and goliath, that the official reception party will meet the reception party and he will then travel to royal hillsborough castle the members of the public lining the street will get their first proper glimpse of the new king. there he will have an audience with the secretary of state for northern ireland and will meet
cathedral. this is as you say his first visit here as king. his 40th visit to northern ireland, and his car pulled up, his window was a little bit down, he was behind the barriers, a few feet away and i was so struck by the way that the way the king waved at the crowd before he was even out of the car and he was opened the door and was out and he waved. this is sort of not the way perhaps people have thought of the monarchy in the past, it is somewhat stuffy and a little bit aloof. this was a king connecting with the people of his country. he was met by the lord lieutenant on the steps of the cathedral here. introduced so some other local dignitaries. but even as he walked up those few steps into this old cathedral here, the cathedral that is known for being a cross community cathedral, even as he walked up the steps before he went in, he turned and his queen consort camilla waved again at the crowd before they went in. and it is expected, you are hearing the trumpets playing
as monarch this morning, before travelling to scotland. it s monday 12th september. people here in edinburgh will be the first members of the public to file past the coffin of queen elizabeth ii this evening, as scotland bids it s final farewell. evening, as scotland bids its final farewell. king charles iii will accompany the queen s coffin as it travels from here at the palace of holyroodhouse, along the royal mile to st giles cathedral where it will remain under continuous vigil for 2h hours. yesterday thousands of mourners lined the route as the coffin made the 175 mile journey from balmoral down to edinburgh, as judith moritz reports. balmoral was the queen s most beloved home. scotland her place of refuge. how fitting, then, that it s across this land that she is beginning her finaljourney. these were the hills she knew. the forests she enjoyed. and the communities she felt closest to. all along the route, crowds returned that affection. and then, a majestic sight, as
