We recently celebrated National Biodiversity Week, highlighting our dependence on biodiversity on multiple aspects of our daily lives.
The week was marked with a series of events and presentations in the media and online.
In County Longford, a short video on aspects of natural heritage, from Arctic Char in Lough Naback to the human impact of climate change, were created by local groups and individuals, hosted on the Longford Heritage & Archives Services Facebook page.
There was a global flavour to the 2021 Padraic Colum Gathering, with attendees from Britain, the US and Australia joining the online event on Saturday, May 15, .

The annual Padraic Colum Gathering has become a much-anticipated date in the Longford literary calendar to everyone who loves poems like ‘The Drover’ and ‘An Old Woman of the Roads’ and of course the beautiful ballad ‘She Moved through the Fair’.
The Colum Gathering was established in 2017 to celebrate the life and work of one of Longford’s best known and best loved writers and poets.
A very important and gratifying part of this event has been the involvement of members of the Colum family, many of whom travelled from around the globe to be in Longford for this special weekend.

Longford Library is one of many facilities opening their doors this morning after 5 months.
While many services are still available such as book loans, printing and copying, the public are being asked not to loiter around the building if possible.

2021 follows one of the most significant and challenging years in recent human history. As we tentatively move towards a post-Covid-19 world, we can begin to reflect upon the devastating impact that Covid-19 has had on all human life.
As we know too well, the impact on older generations has been particularly destructive, as well as overwhelmingly isolating.
However, during this time, we have also learned more about our capacities for solidarity, togetherness, resilience and social support.
