Shanghai, the major Chinese financial centre, had put over 26 million residents under lockdown last week to contain the city's biggest-ever coronavirus outbreak.
Of the locally confirmed cases, 425 were reported in Shanghai, where the military and thousands of healthcare workers have been sent to help execute coronavirus tests.
26 million people of Shanghai were asked to test themselves on Sunday (April 3) using antigen kits and report any positive results. Meanwhile, stories of how Shanghai separates COVID-positive children from their parents have gone viral in the country and triggered widespread public anger.
