Hackney youth charity director recognised

Originally from Edinburgh, Colette Allen has worked at the youth charity Hackney Quest for 20 years and was nominated by the council in the scheme honouring those making a difference to their local communities during the Covid pandemic. Based on Poole Road, the charity has 100 volunteers and works to provide mentoring services, activities, and support to more than 300 young people in the borough.

COVID-19 ‘Lockdown Hero’ accolade for caring college health workers Caring lecturers and staff at Coleg Cambria received a Lockdown Hero accolade for supporting students through the Coronavirus pandemic. The Health and Social Care department at Cambria’s Yale site in Wrexham is among the finalists vying for a prestigious Pearson National Teaching Award. Nominated by Lowri Jarvis, 17, and fellow learners on the Level 3 course, the team – including Claire Williams, Amy Campbell, Kate Davies, Wendy Fowler, Greg Rae and Stefanie Matthews – were praised for their “outstanding student and wellbeing support during lockdown”. Lowri, from Wrexham, said their enthusiasm and energy helped the cohort tackle the challenges of COVID-19 over the past 12 months.

The past year has been “a shock to everyone’s system”, said Sam Laub, who runs Gorgeous Brewery behind The Bull pub, in North Hill, with her brother Rob. When lockdowns descended, the Highgate community rallied around: local shops, cafés and customers were “lovely and ordered cases of beer directly from us”, said Sam.
