Wildfire seasons on record. . Midmay as temperatures soared into the 90s a series of wildfires broke out as the hot, dry santa ana winds pushed the heat forward. In all there were 19 individual fires burning within weeks. When the smoke cleared one man was dead. Dozens of homes lay in ruins and more than 21 homes had burned. As of july 1st, crews had responded to more than 2,700 wildfires. Thats about 1,000 more than usual for this time of year. But while flames can quickly consume large areas, as Bob Mackenzie first reported back in 1994, firefighters and homeowners have to protect the land foot by foot, and house by house. This morning, Fire Fightings crews moved in toward the monster rather than waiting for it to come to them. From the way the fire was traveling it was expected to craft some of these firefighters were going on fumes after two days of near constant work. But they were ready to make a stand again this time to save individual farmhouses. The biggest concern we have is
Followed. Good evening and welcome to a second look. Im julie haener. This month marks a devastating anniversary of the loma prieta earthquake. We begin this second look with Dennis Richmond and a look at how this bridge collapsed when the earth moved on that fateful day. I was out here in the backyard and all of a sudden everything started rocking and rolling. I looked up the street and i could see the top freeway pancaking down on top of the other one. There was this very loud noise and there was like screeching. And i could see the road rippling in front of me. Almost like black ribbon coming at me. I couldnt figure out what was going on. And i thought we were being gone. I thought that, you know something had happened and that our country was being bombed. I could see guardrails going down. And cars going off to the side. And i thought this is really serious. I didnt know what to do. I kept trying to pull over to the right. I kept feeling these waves. I would go up one and then dow
Stories of survival. Hello everyone im Frank Somerville and welcome to a second look. It was 20 years last month in 1995. Outside fires ranged across the equivalent of 70 u. S. City blocks. Buildings were in ruin, cars thrown from collapsed highways. More than 6,400 people were killed. 30,000 others were injured. Randy shandobil filed this report the day after that earthquake hit as the fires were still burning. The fires had raged all through the night. Set by broken gas mains. The assistance is really at this point nothing is happening. And the fires are just burning without any response. Firefighters were slow to reach the fires because so many roads and highways are in ruin. Rescue workers and paramedics had the same problem. We saw a convey of ambulances try to leave kobe, and theres so many cars in the road that could not get by. I have never experienced anything like this in my life. I was so scared, i was speechless. Crowds. And tom bradley asked governor wilson to send in the national guard. Hello everyone and welcome to second look. Im frank somerville. The protests that happened last week come from many years ago. The grainy video included indisputable proof of police brutality. Reporter it began with a 100mile an hour chase according to the Highway Patrol and ended with Los Angeles Police officers beating clubbing and stomping on the head of a 25yearold black man, rodney king. He was lying face down, spread out. And when he was in that position then they started hitting him. At that point he got up and tried to get away thats when i got out with a camera and started filming. Reporter witnesses including the man who shot this video tape says king who was booked for speeding and avoiding arrest offered no resistance. They said the beating went on for more than a minute. I was just amazed of what was happening. I was thinking what in the heck could he have done to deserve such punishment. Reporter
