Petition to save heart of the community school from closure

Powys school closure plans criticised by Lib Dems

Plans to close four rural schools in Powys by August 2022 have been criticised by the Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats. Senedd election candidate Alison Alexander said the timing of the announcement made by Powys Council was dreadful for families and teachers Next week, the Cabinet will be asked to start the statutory process to close Castle Caereinion Church in Wales School, Churchstoke County Primary School, Llanbedr Church in Wales School and Llanfihangel Rhydithon County Primary School. A consultation is expected to start later this month if it is given the go-ahead. READ MORE: Mrs Alexander said: Many parents and teachers in affected villages will be reading the statements from Conservative-Independent-run Powys County Council Cabinet trumpeting ambitious plans for ‘educational transformation’ only to be horrified to find this actually means their local schools are ear-marked for closure as part of this ‘grand project’.

Council are willing to go the extra milestone

MANY of us are always targeting milestones, and that is certainly true for one rural Radnorshire community – although they’re searching for a milestone of a rather different kind. Llanfihangel Rhydithon Community Council are keen to locate the whereabouts of one of its historic milestones, near the village of Dolau. The milestone was situated on the verge of the A488 just north of Dolau, near Llandrindod Wells and towards Knighton. The milestone was put in place by the Radnorshire Turnpike Trust in the early 19th century and is one of 50 such examples in Radnorshire. They are all listed monuments, part of the local environment and historic landmarks that remind us of the Rebecca Riots in some areas against the tollgates placed along the toll roads.
