Wildfire scorches thousands of acres, force evacuations

SAND LAKE, Mich. (AP) Firefighters are battling a blaze that has blackened about thousands of acres in northeastern Michigan and has forced about 100 area residents to flee their homes, state police officials said Friday.
The U.S. Forest Service started a control burn at the Huron-Manistee National Forests north of the village of Sand Lake that raged out of control and threatened to set fire to housing subdivisions in the area, according to Joshua Veal, the public affairs officer at the forests. Multiple aircraft, including tankers, were involved in battling the fire.
16-year-old killed in Saginaw shooting

SAGINAW, MI - A 16-year-old boy is dead after he was shot multiple times Saturday night in Saginaw, police said.
Saginaw police officers responded to reports of a homicide around 8 p.m., April 17 on North Harrison Street between Holland Avenue and Miller Street.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered the male victim, who was pronounced deceased at the scene from the injuries he’d suffered in the shooting incident, according to Michigan State Police.
The victim’s name has not been released.
The Saginaw Major Crimes Unit, consisting of Michigan State Police and Saginaw police detectives, is investigating the incident, Michigan State Police Lt. Liz Rich told MLive Sunday afternoon.

Missing 16-year-old girl found dead along St. Clair County trail
Police are investigating after a 16-year-old girl went missing this weekend and was subsequently found dead Sunday morning.
Leah Conner of Avoca in St. Clair County went for a walk at about 11:20 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from Michigan State Police.
Her family reported her missing about 4:15 p.m. after she failed to return home, police said
The investigation led police to the Trestle Bridge on the Wadhams to Avoca Trail, police said. A K-9 was used to search the area and Conner was found a short time later.
