However, many data sources show how those two groups are the most affected by environmental hazards.
Communities of color have higher exposure rates to air pollution. Low-income people also suffer the effects of water contamination in rural areas, indigenous communities, and migrant farmworker communities.
People of color are also underrepresented in environmental and sustainability work and conversation.
A low percentage of environmental degrees or tenured faculty positions in the field are held by non-white students. And, there is underrepresentation in the leadership at major U.S. environmental organizations.
Despite that, people with multicultural identities and experiences do have a role as advocates for the environment, even though they may not define themselves with typical environmental labels.

ZEELAND City on a Hill, a nonprofit ministry center that houses 38 non-profits and ministries in the repurposed former Zeeland Community Hospital, is launching its first major capital campaign since 2006.
The ministry center is seeking at least $300,000 in funds for a down payment on for a $1.2 million heating system replacement with a fundraising campaign called Burning Bright.
In a press release from the organization, City on a Hill said the former hospital building s steam boilers, which heat 70 percent of the building, are outdated, require ongoing repairs and need to be replaced.
“When we came here 15 years ago, we knew that the heating system that takes care of two-thirds of the building was an older system,” explained City on a Hill Director Gary Ellens in the release.

Our community has a passion for sustainable living and for Holland’s Community Energy Plan. The Holland Board of Public Works offers an easy option for choosing to use more sustainable energy the Elective Renewable Energy Rate.
Renewable energy is electricity from sources that produce little or no emissions by using resources that replenish themselves naturally, such as wind, landfill gas, and sunlight. Fifteen percent of the electricity supplied by Holland BPW comes from renewable resources.
The Elective Renewable Energy Rate gives customers a choice in their source of electricity. When customers choose additional renewable energy, their demand drives the BPW to secure additional renewable supplies.
