As a small child, my favourite storybooks were British author Alison Uttleyâs charming tales of Little Grey Rabbit, Squirrel, and friends. My mother once told me she read them to me so often that she knew them all by heart.
Intrigued by the adventures of these little woodland creatures I was delighted when chipmunks, rabbits and red squirrels began to visit my garden last summer. Storybook adventures had come to life, right in my own backyard. However, soon I discovered that far more was at play than I had imagined. Suddenly, several of my hostas looked as if they had been the victims of a chainsaw attack. Squirrel was proving himself to be a plump little tyrant who did not play well with others and the chipmunks had formed a gang. Annoyed by this show of bad behaviour, I vowed that next year would be different.
