The Chestermere home along Oakmere Close was owned by Amjad Kamal, neighbour Khaleel Bhatti told Postmedia. The fire occurred while Amjad, his wife Batool Rashid and their five children were hosting his brother Asad Kamal, his wife Rafiya Kamal and their three children.

RCMP Cpl. Tammy Keibel said the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, though there is still no indication that the cause is criminal in nature.

CHESTERMERE, Alb. Des prières ont été prononcées samedi à la mosquée Green Dome de Calgary et au Centre islamique de Chestermere à la mémoire de sept membres d’une même famille qui ont péri dans l’incendie d’une maison, vendredi matin.
L’imam Syed Soharwardy, du Conseil suprême islamique du Canada, a indiqué que des proches de la famille, dont certains venaient d’arriver en Alberta en provenance de l’Ontario, ont pu regarder en direct les cérémonies.
Selon M. Soharwardy, ils sont toujours ébranlés par la tragédie.
Dans un communiqué, le maire de Chestermere, Marshall Chalmers, a dit que «les mots ne peuvent pas témoigner avec justesse l’ampleur de la dévastation qui frappe [la] collectivité».
