Hawaii’s rural island of Kauai has seen a spike of COVID-19 cases since launching pre-travel testing to reignite the state’s decimated tourism industry. Early and aggressive local measures coupled with a strictly enforced statewide travel quarantine kept the island’s 72,000 residents mostly healthy with only 61 known coronavirus cases from March through September. But on Oct. 15, the state allowed travel to partially resume Kauai then went from having no active infections at all in the first part of October to at least 84 new cases in the ensuing seven weeks. The surge seeded community transmission and led to the island s first and so far only COVID-19 death.

from mayor fenty s house. according to police reports, around 6:00 p.m., a nanny finds a 10-month-old baby girl unconsciousnd not breathing. the nanny runs to the mayor s house to get help from an officer stationed there. here now from captain mike farrish. the officer immediately began rendering cpr in an attempt to save the child s life. they summoned assistance at the same time. they came up, they transported the child, and at about 9:30 last night, the child was pronounced dead. reporter: sources say police are looking into the possibility that somehow a baby monitor ended up in the child s crib. that the nanny put the baby down for a nap. minutes later, when the nanny returned to the room, the baby was unconscious and the cord from the baby monitor was found wrapped around the child s neck. do you suspect any foul play here? at this point we re keeping an open mind and investigating the case like we would any other. investigators say they re awaiting autopsy resu
