Greenock Sheriff Court A trainee soldier bit his boyfriend and tried to jump from a second-floor flat in Greenock after becoming depressed during lockdown and through a family bereavement. Alan Laird, 20, also smashed a front door and struggled violently with police after officers found him with a shard of glass and feared he was about to self harm whilst flailing and shouting . The first offender had become increasingly agitated over a period of several hours after drinking to excess at the flat on Sir Michael Street shortly before Christmas, the sheriff court was told. Laird s lawyer, Edel McGinty, said he d not told the Army about the serious incident and urged Sheriff Andrew McIntyre not to proceed to convicting him at this stage.

A GREENOCK man who constantly flouted a non-harassment order barring him from the victim of his domestic abuse has had it scrapped after the woman sent him a Valentine s card in jail. John Traill had previously been warned that a calculator might be needed to work out a prison sentence due to the number of times he d breached the order designed to protect his on-off partner. But a sheriff decided instead to fine him £1,000 and revoke it, after being told that Traill s girlfriend, Carol Bell, is every bit as culpable as him in the numerous breaches. Defence lawyer Gerry Keenan said: The vast majority of contact has been on a consensual basis.
