Garcia picks up steam in New York City mayoral race after snagging Times endorsement

NEW YORK Kathryn Garcia is on the upswing, and her opponents in the New York City mayoral race are responding in kind.
In the days following the coveted New York Times endorsement, Team Garcia reported a boost in fundraising for her underdog mayoral campaign and more media interest in a recent press conference on public safety. She appeared on Good Day New York and The Brian Lehrer Show two regular destinations for Gracie Mansion contenders to discuss her platform for the office.

The editorial board of the New York Times on Monday endorsed Kathryn Garcia for mayor, giving the longtime civil servant a potentially major boost in the crowded contest.
The Times lauded Garcia as “a go-to problem solver for the past decade” as she ran the city’s Sanitation Department, overhauled public housing amid a scandal over lead paint, and more.
An endorsement from the Times, which many New York Democrats take as gospel on the issues of the day, is among the most coveted kudos in city politics.

ASTORIA, QUEENS After endorsing Comptroller Scott Stringer s mayoral bid at the end of 2020, Queens city council member Costa Constantinides announced Tuesday that his second vote will go to former Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.
Constantinides, who represents District 22 in Astoria and chairs the council s Environmental Protection Committee, told Patch that he chose to rank Stringer first, followed by Garcia, because of their climate plans.

When the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club held the inaugural Zoom forum for mayoral candidates in October, some 1,400 viewers turned in to watch as candidates outlined their visions for governing New York City and saying whether they had smoked marijuana. But nearly six months later, many Democratic mayoral candidates have participated in more than 50 Zoom forums. And as the attendance at many of these forums has waned, so has candidates’ interest in attending them, a sign that the era of the Zoom campaign could be near the end.
“We were the first and everyone wanted to see how they were coming out of the box,” said Allen Roskoff, president of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, of the group’s initial forum. “Afterwards, everybody did their forums and it was important to their audience and all that, but by now, everybody knows the candidates, everybody’s been invited to 2,000 forums and if you do another forum, nobody’s going to come – except – maybe
