Eric Adams had to wait for it – but two weeks after primary day, the Brooklyn borough president has been declared the winner in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, and will be all but guaranteed to take office on Jan. 1, 2022. Preliminary results released Tuesday by the New York City Board of Elections showed Adams with a 1 percentage point lead over Kathryn Garcia, the former New York City sanitation commissioner, in the final round of ranked-choice voting. Adams had 403,333 total votes to Garcia’s 394,907 – a 8,426 vote difference out of nearly 940,000 ballots cast.
These results are nearly final. They include all the votes cast in-person – both in early voting and on Election Day – as well as 118,085 absentee ballots, mailed in or dropped off by New York City Democrats. NEW YORK Eric Adams narrowly won the New York City mayoral primary, defeating second-place rival Kathryn Garcia by 8,426 votes in the first citywide race to utilize ranked-choice voting.
Adams the Brooklyn borough president who retired as a police captain in 2006 to become a state senator rode an anti-crime wave to clinch the Democratic spot in November. He now faces Republican Curtis Sliwa in a general election to replace outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Kathryn Garcia and Maya Wiley, the two mayoral candidates who have consistently trailed Eric Adams in the election results as new tabulations have been released, did not concede on Tuesday evening, even after Mr. Adams declared victory and The Associated Press projected him as the winner of the Democratic nomination.
Both Ms. Wiley and Ms. Garcia were vying to become the first woman elected New York City’s mayor. With most absentee votes now counted, Mr. Adams led Ms. Garcia by 8,426 votes in the city’s first mayoral contest to be determined by ranked-choice voting.
