WAILUKU With attorneys and the judge acknowledging a Kahului man’s progress in drug treatment and life, he was placed on four years’ probation Thursday for burglary and drug convictions.
David Mollena Jr., 30, was working and participating in drug treatment on Maui, after the pandemic made it difficult to obtain treatment off island, said his attorney, Elizabeth Cuccia.
“When he is sober, he is a contributing member of society,” she said.
Deputy Prosecutor Shelly Miyashiro also cited Mollena’s progress and the victims’ desire for him to get treatment, in recommending that he be sentenced to probation and given credit for more than 18 months he spent in jail.

A family photo shows Hazel, a black male cat with a white underbelly, who has been missing from his Haiku home since last year.
Nine months after Hazel went missing from his Haiku home, his family hasn’t given up hope of being reunited with the 4-year-old black cat with a distinctive white belly.
“It’s so traumatic to lose him,” said Tash Summit. “He’s been part of our family since he was born. I miss him every day.”
After calling for him on their property where he was last seen June 29, then talking to neighbors, the family put up posters and expanded their search area to “almost all of Haiku,” she said.

WAILUKU A Kihei man facing child sexual assault charges on Maui has agreed to be extradited to Oregon to face charges in a similar case.
Lawrence Schumacher, 67, had his Maui case dismissed Friday so it wouldn’t interfere with his extradition, said Deputy Prosecutor J.W. Hupp.
The dismissal was without prejudice, so the charges could be brought against Schumacher again.
He was arrested in August on a Maui County grand jury warrant charging him with continuous sexual assault of a minor and three counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child under age 14. The offenses occurred between September and December 2019, according to the indictment.
