Crime down, service calls up for Ligonier in 2020

LIGONIER — Crime dropped in Ligonier in 2020, even as the number of service calls went up to their highest point in recent years. But, as it turns out, the increase in calls and incidents is being driven a little bit by more people requesting help but probably more so by better logging software, the police chief said. “Overall crime is low and we hopefully we keep it that way,” Chief Bryan Shearer said. In the police department annual report delivered to the Ligonier City Council on Monday, Shearer reported that the department had 26,074 calls for service in 2020, which includes all incidents and documented calls to the department.

Supremacist letters turn up in Ligonier

LIGONIER — Three neighboring families on Ligonier’s north side discovered white supremacy propaganda and other extremist writing dropped next to their mailboxes on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25, likely tossed out of a vehicle under cover of darkness. Ligonier’s fliers were very similar to those distributed in nearby Topeka and Shipshewana earlier that same week. The sheets of paper had “White Lives Matter” printed in a large bold font on one side, and an incoherent, prayer-type text on the other side. Each sheet pf paper was folded in quarters and placed inside a plastic sandwich bag with an egg-size rock. Like the letters in Topeka, no group is identified on either side of the paper.

Parking changes coming to Glacier neighborhood

LIGONIER — For years, Ligonier residents living in homes on Cadillac Street, El Dorado Drive and Seville Court have been subject to some of the most stringent parking restrictions in the city, but that’s about to change as soon as January. Ligonier’s Common Council voted unanimously to loosen parking restrictions in the Southwest corner neighborhood after Ligonier Police Chief and Public Safety Director Bryan Shearer raised the issue at Monday’s meeting. Shearer said city ordinances prohibiting those residents from parking on either side of the street or in their front yard has created an environment where any homeowner with guests or visitors is left with little choice but to violate the ordinance.
