Bob Gentry, Lida Lenney, Toni Iseman: all three were local officials and environmental activists. In my nearly fifty years of living here, these are the mayors I remember for their courage and boldness in opposing offshore oil drilling, saving Laguna Canyon from developers’ bulldozers, and supporting climate action, respectively. Some of them drew statewide attention for their green leadership.
I have a rich imagination. Savoring council’s unanimous vote on the evening of April 4 to halt blufftop development seaward of its present limits and conduct an Initial Study of the possible impacts of the proposed Blufftop Overlay District measure, images of deceased Lagunans crowded into my mind.
Each week it seems some submittals to the Indy sadly vent frustrations of one kind or another. I just don't get it. I look around at this place we are lucky enough to call home and just wonder how anyone can see Laguna's glass as half empty.
