from the libya border. heather, the violence that is convulsing libya is creating a growing refugee problem if not a crisis here in tunisia. we re on the border between tunisia and libya and even at this late hour, after 11:00 p.m., the refugees continue to stream across that border. the regional transport minister tells us that in the last four days, something like 36,000 people have come here seeking the relative safety of tunisia. the government here is struggling to cope. it has set up a couple of ten camps on the road from the border here, but there are not enough tents, there is not enough food. there is not enough water for everybody. many that we have seen night after night here are sleeping in the freezing temperatures of this tunisia desert and it s a desperate situation. they need help. they need it quickly. that regional transport minister tells me the united nations and
colonel gadhafi is clearly increasingly isolated, but equally clearly seems increasingly determined to push his country toward outright civil war. we re hearing reports from tripoli that he s offering a weapons and vehicles to anyone who will go out into the votes and do his fighting for him. young men are apparently taking up that offer by the dozens, if not hundreds and they are in the streets opening fire indiscriminately, we hear, on otherwise peaceful protesters. the violence has spread well beyond tripoli, of course, throughout northwest libya now, both sides are fighting for control of several towns. take a look at this cell phone video we were given by one of the refugees who came across this, the tunisia-libya border. the cell phone video shows anti-gadhafi demonstrators in the town of zarwea, that is about 20 miles west of tripoli.
they were stopped. they were checked. they were searched. they said it was a very scary situation for them. they talked about gun battles and fighting and war over the last few days. somebody else talked about the hundreds of policemen stopping some cars randomly and not others. it s very hard to get a clear picture of what is clearer, it s a very fluid and dynamic situation on that highway, john. excellent point to make from nic robertson. a volatile situation. nic is in tunisia. let s check in now with the egyptian-libya border. you re hearing tales of terror from those trying to free their homeland. reporter: yes, john. those who managed to make it safely are telling stories they told us are inhumane. they ve been witnessing
in a more rambling than usual radio speech, libya s moammar gadhafi accused al qaeda of fomenting the uprising against his rule. it s all osama bin laden s fault. opposition forces vowing to march on tripoli tomorrow while gadhafi loyalists mass inside the city. this as new estimates of nearly 2,000 dead, although it s hard to determine with no foreign media present. nbc s stephanie gosk is on the egypt/libya border and joins us by phone. stephanie, let s talk about what we know is happening. it seems as though he s more and more embattled, losing more and more control. reporter: yeah, and you know, this statement today was veryรง interesting, because he was addressing a particular town which is about 30 miles west of tripoli. the eastern portion of the country being in the hands of the opposition. this is a town west of tripoli, and only 30 miles from it.
