The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expanding its definition of baby food to include all food products that display an image of an infant or contain the words “infants” or “toddlers” (嬰幼兒) on its outer packaging, it said on Saturday.
The Consumers’ Foundation in December last year said that among 20 rice-based foods it randomly sampled for testing, four contained higher-than-allowed levels of cadmium, but as rice crackers were considered general food, rather than baby food, despite their packaging, they met the standards for adult consumption.

Taipei, Feb. 4 (CNA) Taiwan will begin regulating the amount of permitted glycidyl fatty acid esters (GEs) a substance that could be carcinogenic in humans in certain food products manufactured for infants and young children from July 1, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Thursday.
According to the FDA, GEs are food contaminants found in edible oils that form during the refining process and can turn into the compound glycidol when ingested by humans.
Glycidol is classified as probably carcinogenic under the U.N. s International Agency for Research on Cancer, indicating that there is strong evidence it can cause cancer in humans.
