Taipei, Feb. 4 (CNA) Taiwan will begin regulating the amount of permitted glycidyl fatty acid esters (GEs) -- a substance that could be carcinogenic in humans -- in certain food products manufactured for infants and young children from July 1, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Thursday.
According to the FDA, GEs are food contaminants found in edible oils that form during the refining process and can turn into the compound glycidol when ingested by humans.
Glycidol is classified as "probably carcinogenic" under the U.N.'s International Agency for Research on Cancer, indicating that there is strong evidence it can cause cancer in humans.
