The tentative agreement reached between Columbia and the Graduate Workers of Columbia–United Auto Workers’ bargaining committee failed to pass on April 30. Student-workers voted 1,093-970 with 63-percent participation to continue negotiating, a process that will likely require further mobilization throughout the summer and fall semesters.

The Bargaining Committee for the Graduate Workers of Columbia–United Auto Workers announced Monday that after over two years of bargaining with Columbia for the union’s first labor contract, it is ready to present the contract for a ratification vote.
If ratified, the contract will greatly expand the rights of student-workers; it has 31 articles, ranging from increased benefits and compensation to child care support, that will inject millions of dollars into resources for student-workers. A SCHOOL has raised money for a teaching assistant who lost her life to melanoma this year. Longshaw Junior School in Blackburn asked the children to dress in white or something shiny last Friday to honour the memory of Lynn White, who was a teaching assistant for year six. The school raised £750 for East Lancashire Hospice, where Miss White was cared for. She diagnosed with melanoma in October and died on February 17. Deputy Headteacher at the school, Jonathan Berry said: “She was the beating heart of our school. “She changed a lot of children’s lives for the better and was a great example to all of us.
