The tentative agreement reached between Columbia and the Graduate Workers of Columbia–United Auto Workers’ bargaining committee failed to pass on April 30. Student-workers voted 1,093-970 with 63-percent participation to continue negotiating, a process that will likely require further mobilization throughout the summer and fall semesters.

The Bargaining Committee for the Graduate Workers of Columbia–United Auto Workers announced Monday that after over two years of bargaining with Columbia for the union’s first labor contract, it is ready to present the contract for a ratification vote.
If ratified, the contract will greatly expand the rights of student-workers; it has 31 articles, ranging from increased benefits and compensation to child care support, that will inject millions of dollars into resources for student-workers. Student-workers are expected to return to work on Monday, April 5, after the Graduate Workers of Columbia-United Auto Workers’ bargaining committee voted 7-3 on Friday to pause the strike. The committee accepted the University’s offer, which called for mediation with a corresponding strike pause. Student-workers, who have been striking since March 15, retain the right to strike at any point.
