Twitter stands up to India and refuses to block journalists

Twitter stands up to India and refuses to block journalists Two weeks ago, protests by farmers in India turned violent, even as the country was celebrating the anniversary of its democratic constitution. As thousands marched and drove their tractors through New Delhi, police responded with tear gas and batons, and a young farmer was killed. The protests drew international attention, and a wave of public support for the farmers spread across social media. Indian authorities responded by harassing and even filing sedition charges against journalists, and the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi also demanded Twitter block the accounts of users it said were fomenting hatred and inciting violence, including media outlets like

India cracks down on journalism, again

India cracks down on journalism, again Last Tuesday, as India celebrated a national holiday commemorating its democratic constitution, thousands of farmers marched and drove their tractors through New Delhi. It was the latest in a series of protests against agricultural reforms that many farmers fear will allow large corporations to crush them. Police tear-gassed the demonstrators and charged at the crowd with batons; as Vidya Krishnan wrote in The Atlantic, “the dueling images a celebration of India’s democracy on the one hand, the crushing of dissent on the other were carried on a split screen by many news channels, inadvertently offering the perfect visual metaphor for modern India.” A twenty-five-year-old farmer named Navreet Singh was killed during the protest; officials claimed that he died in a tractor accident, but witnesses said that police shot Singh in the head an account supported by photographic evidence. Jail for disqualified driver caught behind wheel of Transit van

A BANNED driver has been jailed after he was caught behind the wheel – again. Purton man Lewis Page, 29, was found driving a 2006-plate blue Ford Transit van in Ludgershall on January 28.  Prosecutor Ben Worthington told Swindon Magistrates’ Court that police had received another report on Thursday night and, as a result, were on the lookout for the Transit.  Officers spotted it and followed the vehicle down the A338 from Tidworth. The van, inside which was found a small amount of cannabis, came to a stop in Central Street, Ludgershall, at around 11pm. The driver, Page, was already subject to a suspended sentence for driving whilst disqualified., That suspended sentence, imposed in 2019, was the fourth time he’d appeared in court for the offence, JPs were told. He was also on bail awaiting sentence at Reading Magistrates’ Court for assaulting emergency workers.
