A Staten Island race mired in conflict suggests that the civility expected to accompany the new ranked choice voting system is already giving way to old-school, hardball New York politics.
In theory, the system, in which voters rank up to five candidates in order of preference, takes away the motivation for negative campaigning so hopefuls can appeal to as many citizens as possible.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Former Congressman Vito Fossella announced during an interview on the John Catsimatidis radio show Tuesday that he will run for Staten Island borough president, and said he thinks he can “make the difference” for the borough.
“I was born and raised in Staten Island. I feel like the people of Staten Island always expected and deserved the strongest voice possible to represent their interest,” Fossella said during the interview. “We are not a group of folks who support defund the police. We want safer street and safer communities. We don’t want to keep the schools closed. We want our kids to learn and a clean, safe and healthy environment.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Staten Island parents are continuing the fight to get their kids back in the classroom full time.
Dozens of Staten Island families gathered outside the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) building on Saturday in Eltingville to call for a full reopening of New York City’s public schools and an abolishment of the current policy that sees schools shutter whenever two unrelated coronavirus (COVID-19) cases are discovered in the same building.
“We want our schools open now. We want them open five days a week. And we want our high school sports back,” said Leticia Remauro, a candidate for Borough President.
