The group gathering signatures for a petition that would preserve parking lots in downtown Eureka announced Monday they’ve collected enough for the measure to go on the ballot, so long as enough signatures are valid.
Senate Bill 1383, passed in 2016, requires municipalities to collect green waste – such as yard trimmings and food scraps – and cities across Humboldt County, in addition to the county itself, have been scrambling to implement the bill’s requirements, which aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. However, a recent report from the Little Hoover Commission, a state oversight agency, noted statewide struggles for compliance.
The Eureka city council talked Tuesday on the updated plan for Eureka’s waterfront area. With a potential of creating over 1,000 jobs and over 1,000 housing units in the part of Eureka that includes Old Town and the commercial bayfront, this project looks to infill the area for redevelopment. The city hopes this plan will bring more housing units to the area and revitalize Eureka.
