After a year of experiencing art (along with almost everything else) in the digital realm, the value of going virtual is being explored deeper through a new partnership between social platform Snapchat and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The multi-year initiative will bring together local artists and technologists from different communities in Los Angeles to highlight and share under-represented histories from the region with a wider audience.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Snap Inc. launch LACMA x Snapchat: Monumental Perspectives Initiative rolls out with dynamic schedule of programs including panels, podcasts, and a docuseries. LOS ANGELES, CA .-The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in collaboration with Snap Inc., today introduces the first collection of LACMA × Snapchat: Monumental Perspectives projects. This multi-year initiative brings together local artists and technologists to create virtual monuments that explore just some of the histories of Los Angeles communities in an effort to highlight perspectives from across the region. These augmented reality monuments were built using Snapchat’s technology and are available to experience starting today.

LOS ANGELES, CA .-LACMA, in collaboration with Snap Inc., announces an ambitious new interactive initiative called Monumental Perspectives. Over the coming years, the program will bring together local artists and technologists to create virtual monuments and murals. These new augmented reality (AR) monuments will celebrate diverse histories in an effort to reflect richer and more inclusive perspectives from communities across the region. Launching in early 2021, this initiative will pair major and emerging artists with members of Snap’s Lens Creator community and bring their shared visions to life throughout Los Angeles, including LACMA’s Wilshire Boulevard campus and Magic Johnson Park. The virtual monuments and murals can be experienced through the Snapchat app.
