In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly was scheduled to convene on January 13 and adjourn on February 11.
The legislators serving in this session took office following the 2019 elections. Democrats won a 21-18 majority in the Senate and a 55-45 majority in the House. The party also controlled the governorship, creating a Democratic state government trifecta. At the start of the 2021 session, Virginia was one of 28 state legislatures where neither party had a veto-proof supermajority in both chambers.
The Virginia General Assembly is responsible for redistricting following each census. Legislators were expected to address redistricting as part of the 2021 legislative session. As of the 2020 Census, Virginia was one of two states where a political commission was responsible for redistricting.

In 2021, the Alabama State Legislature is scheduled to convene on February 2, 2021, and adjourn on May 30, 2021.
The legislators serving in this session took office following the 2018 elections. Republicans won a 27-7 majority in the Senate and a 76-28 majority in the House. The party also controlled the governorship, creating a Republican state government trifecta. At the start of the 2021 session, Alabama was one of 16 state legislatures where Republicans had a veto-proof supermajority in both chambers.
The Alabama State Legislature is responsible for redistricting following each census. Legislators were expected to address redistricting as part of the 2021 legislative session. As of the 2020 Census, Alabama was one of 37 states where legislators were responsible for redistricting.

The
South Dakota State Legislature is the legislative branch of the government of South Dakota. It is a bicameral legislative body, consisting of the Senate which has 35 members, and the House of Representatives, which has 70 members. The two houses are similar in most respects; the Senate alone holds the right to confirm gubernatorial appointments to certain offices. In addition, the Senate votes by roll call vote, whereas the larger house uses an electronic voting system.
South Dakota has a Republican state government trifecta. A trifecta exists when one political party simultaneously holds the governor’s office and majorities in both state legislative chambers. As of April 4, 2021, there are 23 Republican trifectas, 15 Democratic trifectas, and 12 divided governments where neither party holds trifecta control.
