South Dakota State Legislature South Dakota State Legislature Length of term:   Elections The South Dakota State Legislature is the legislative branch of the government of South Dakota. It is a bicameral legislative body, consisting of the Senate which has 35 members, and the House of Representatives, which has 70 members. A trifecta exists when one political party simultaneously holds the governor’s office and majorities in both state legislative chambers. As of April 4, 2021, there are 23 Republican trifectas, 15 Democratic trifectas, and 12 divided governments where neither party holds trifecta control.
