Lawmakers on either side of an amendment allowing school employees to physically intervene if a student was ready to do harm to another student played a high-stakes game of chicken Tuesday.
At the end of four hours of debate, the bill (LB529) by Sen. Lynne Walz of Fremont adjusting how proceeds from the Nebraska Lottery were spent to support college scholarships and other educational programs stalled.
How they voted
Because lawmakers voted 28-11 and failed to end debate by the required 33 votes on an amendment to a bill (LB529) that would have reconfigured how lottery proceeds are used to fund scholarship and education programs, the bill is effectively dead this year. Voting to end debate:
The bill is not asking for anything special, she said. It s preemptive to keep houses of worship from having greater restrictions or penalties than secular organizations, Geist added.
The proposal, introduced on Day 3 of the 90-day legislative session, also allows religious organizations that feel they have been unduly burdened to sue the government for relief and damages.
