A discussion over dinner about an old Athens murder case is the basis for a July fundraising event to benefit the Athens Community Council on Aging.
The dinner is highlighted by an “exclusive panel discussion” of the infamous murder of Athens businessman T.K. Harty.
The slaying revolved around a series of events in 1977 at the current location of the Council on Aging on Hoyt Street. Back in the 70s, the area was a popular hangout with taverns and restaurants such as The Station, located in the former Southern Railway depot on Hoyt Street.
It was in that colorful decade when young businessman T.K. Harty, owner of T.K. Harty’s Saloon, became what police said was the target of vengeance by another tavern owner, John Mooney of Somebody’s Pizza.
