HELENA, Mont. (AP) Abortion rights groups are challenging abortion bans in some states by arguing the bans supported by certain religious principles violate the religious rights of people with different beliefs.
HB 432 received an equal number of proponents and opponents during its first hearing Monday. It isn’t likely to advance this session with Republicans holding a supermajority, but the sponsor argued it would bring clarity to the legal situation in Montana. However, the bill drew fierce opposition from the Montana Family Foundation.
Montana spends $3.5 million a year to make sure that students in public schools learn about Indigenous culture in the classrooms. But an advocate told lawmakers on Monday that more than half of that funding for “Indian Education for All” has not been accounted for.
No doubt about it, the months ahead will be difficult as Montanans watch legislators try to chisel away at our constitutionally protected right to privacy.
There were few contested primaries for the Montana Legislature in southcentral and Eastern Montana, but many of those races finalized selections for state House or Senate.
