This April 23rd through 25th, a selection of
Stephen King movies will be available to watch online for free. Hosted by Canadian film production company Barker Street Cinema, the virtual festival, called STEPHEN KING RULES, will screen 25 submissions by filmmakers from all over the world, many of which have never been seen by a global audience before.
Since 1977, the Master of Horror Stephen King has allowed emerging filmmakers to adapt his previously unproduced short stories into films that may help launch their careers through what is called the “Dollar Baby Deal”. An upcoming Stephen King film festival will feature a short featuring Sault Ste. Marie native Joanna Douglas.
The Doctor’s Case will be screened April 24 at 5:30 p.m. as part of the Stephen King Rules Dollar Baby Film Festival. The online event runs April 23-25 and is presented by Barker Street Cinema.

James Douglas, son of former Sault Star reporter and Sault This Week editor Tom Douglas, is helping organize the festival. He directed The Doctor’s Case. The 2018 release, featuring his cousin Joanne Douglas (Anne with an E, Being Erica) in the cast, is one of more than 20 films based on short stories penned by King that will be shown.
Since 1977 King has offered his unproduced short stories to be adapted into films by those who are looking to launch their careers. The effort is called Dollar Baby Deal and the showcase will feature the independent movies, interview and panel discussions with the filmmakers. Barker Street Cinema made their own Dollar Baby adaptation of King s mystery called The Doctor s Case three years ago and will show their work during the festival. I can personally attest to the impact the Dollar Baby initiative has had on my career as a filmmaker,” James Douglas of Barker Street Cinema said. “Being able to share these stories with the world in this manner is unbelievably profound.”
