A surfer on Boscombe beach in Dorset A stern warning has been issued to people in Wiltshire and other nearby counties not to make unnecessary trips to Dorset. During half term, police will continue to carry out daily patrols on the main routes into Dorset, as well as at popular beauty spots, and will be quizzing motorists about their journeys. A fine of £200 could be handed to people who have travelled unnecessarily and in blatant breach of the rules. Area Manager Seth Why, of Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We completely understand and would like to encourage the public to get outside with their children this half term, but we also need everyone to respect the guidelines and stay local.
Craig Oakes, President of Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce, said: Personally, I was quite optimistic we might slip through the net, bearing in mind cases are still some of the lowest in the country down here but unfortunately not. “I know the announcement won’t come as a huge surprise to businesses, but they will be disappointed they cannot operate over New Year’s Eve. “I feel that this last-minute approach where restaurants and pubs were gearing up to do New Year’s Eve and then pulling the rug from under them at the last minute is unfair and upsetting.
