ROCK GLEN â Deputies have identified the two women killed Tuesday afternoon as they drove away from a COVID-19 vaccine clinic.
Jacquelin Simpson, 83, of Perry was driving a 2001 Volkswagen, said Wyoming County Sheriff Gregory Rudolph. She was exiting the clinicâs location at the county Highway Department when she pulled into the path of an oncoming Ford Taurus.
Simpson and her passenger was Jessie Button, 82, of Perry died in the accident.
The other driver was identified as Amy Szulewski, 45, of Portage in Livingston County. She was treated for minor injuries at Wyoming County Community Hospital and released from WCCHS.
The crash is being investigated by Deputy Nick Wright in coordination with the sheriffâs Crash Management Team and is continuing.
UPDATE: the New York State-run temporary mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic was opened for appointments this morning at 7:59 a.m.
By 9:20 there were no appointments available, however that has been fluctuating, officials at the Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments said.
âWe encourage those who are seeking vaccination to periodically check the site as some may cancel their appointments or the system catches up,â they said.
âWe realize this may be disappointing and frustrating for our local county residents as it is to us. We will continue to advocate for increased vaccine allocations moving forward,â stated Paul Pettit, Director of Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments. âEvery dose of vaccine that comes to our counties are administered within the week of receipt. We will continue to call on the state to increase allocations to rural counties as our vaccination rates continue to lag in comparison to surrounding counties.â
A Batavia native has been missing in Ecuador for more than a week and his family and friends are hoping for any help they can get in locating him.
Travis Joseph Sackett, a 2003 graduate of Batavia High School, went for a day hike to the Imbabura Volcano on Sunday, Feb. 21.
He was reported missing when he failed to show up for work the next day.
Sackett was living at a farm in Quito, where he worked for free room and board.
His lifelong friend, Jennifer Ko, also formerly of Batavia, said Sackett was in between missions after a stint with the Peace Corps.
