Volvo has ambitious plans to go green. By 2030, the Swedish automaker aims to sell only electric vehicles. That means no hybrids, either – nothing with an internal combustion engine. But for now, it’s still possible to get your hands on hybrids like the XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid, formerly known as the T8 plug-in hybrid. An all-electric XC90 Recharge is expected in 2022.
Powering the XC90 hybrid is a two-litre turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor. You might think that an I-4 doesn’t seem sufficient for a tall, 2,310 kg all-wheel-drive SUV, but it is. The gas engine and electric motor combine to produce 400 horsepower (313 hp from the engine and 87 hp from the electric motor) and 472 lb-ft of torque (295 lb-ft of torque from the engine and 177 lb-ft of torque from the electric motor).
