For nearly a decade, members of the Flint, Michigan community were exposed to elevated levels of lead in their water supply. This water crisis led to public officials, celebrities and activists calling on city and state officials to be held accountable for their actions leading up to this catastrophe. Ultimately, nine people were indicted for their actions leading up to the Flint Water Crisis and residents in the city were awarded a $641.25 million settlement. However, health experts have raised concerns regarding what Flint residents must do to get portions of the settlement.
Those seeking to access the large settlement may receive an increased payout if they can provide proof of excessive leads in their bodies. (FLINT, Mich.) Some Flint, Michigan, residents who may have been affected by lead in their water during the 2014 crisis may now be exposed to radiation in an effort to get a share of the $641.25 million water crisis settlement. Anyone exposed to lead at that time can receive a higher settlement if they submit proof of excessive lead levels, through blood or bone tests, or show evidence of injury, according to court documents.
Some attorneys in the case are using portable X-ray devices in an effort to detect excessive levels of lead in claimants’ bones, but some health officials and medical experts question whether the use of these machines is unnecessary and poses any unjustifiable risk.

âKinda worried it harmed my child,â said Amber Stebbins, who is 28 weeks pregnant.
Stebbins already had to live through the Flint water crisis, but now she has another health concern relating to the Flint water settlement, which involves testing some plaintiffs are being advised to get.
âWe were already harmed, so itâs like why would you keep adding to the mess,â Stebbins said.

Ann Arbor Federal Judge Judith Levy has been asked to stop attorneys from using a hand-held scanner mostly used in industrial settings and not on humans. The testing is being done not in a clinic but in their law office in Flint Township.
