Breaking: Durham Mayor Steve Schewel Won t Run for Re-Election Saying that he still considers Durham “the greatest city in the world” and that it is in good hands with the new city manager Wanda Page, Schewel said he wants to leave the job to someone else so he can focus on a new granddaughter on the way. “I’m looking forward to having dinner with my wife every night,” he said.  Courtesy of Durham City Council Mayor Steve Schewel Schewel was first elected mayor in 2017 and won reelection in 2019. He had previously served six years on the City Council. In his campaigns for mayor, he has promised to focus on affordable housing, livable wages, equitable transit systems, police reform and LGBTQ rights.
