Parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee, along with corners of Arkansas and Georgia, were impacted by severe weather Tuesday. At least three people were killed in the South during the storms, according to an Associated Press story, including a Tennessee woman who was killed when a tree fell on her home.

Live updates: Extensive damage reported in Yazoo County following suspected tornado Staff Reports Mississippi is recovering from a series of storms that spawned several tornadoes and straight line winds Sunday night, leaving damaged properties and broken tree limbs in its wake.  Officials from the National Weather Service in Jackson say they have sent teams out to various locations in central Mississippi to assess the damage and confirm tornado reports.  A tornado caused extensive damage in Tupelo as it ripped off roofs and knocked down trees and power lines at about 10 p.m., according to media reports. The National Weather Service s Jackson office on Tuesday confirmed four twisters hit the state Friday night and early Saturday morning. Meteorologist Latrice Maxie said there were no injuries or deaths reported from the tornadoes, although the system did cause some damage to homes and sheds from downed trees. An EF0 touched down just west of Pelahatchie in Rankin County Friday evening bringing wind speeds of up to 76 mph. The tornado traveled northward for just over 11 miles before lifting into the sky.  An EF1 tornado was confirmed to have traveled through the city of Kosciusko in Attala County Friday evening. The tornado had peak wind speeds of 95 mph and traveled less than a mile.

Mississippi weather: More severe storms, tornadoes possible

After Wednesday s storms brought some damage across the South, more severe weather is expected to pass through Mississippi Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. The storms Wednesday produced strong winds throughout the state. Wind speeds reached 54 mph at the airport near Greenville and 55 mph in Cleveland, according to meteorologist Latrice Maxie with the National Weather Service s Jackson office. Strong winds downed a few power lines and trees in Glen Allan, but no other reports of damage in Mississippi had been sent in Thursday morning, Maxie said, although there had been reports of damage in Louisiana. The national Storm Prediction Center is projecting that the storm system Friday afternoon will impact parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas.
