Ash Sutton insisted that “nursing a car that wanted to kill me” had been key to him securing the first pole position of the BTCC season at Thruxton.
Sutton had topped the times in free practice at the wheel of his Infiniti Q50 having set the fastest time in FP1 and was the early pace setter in qualifying in continuing to wet conditions.
However, as a dry line started to appear on track, a number of rivals switched to slick tyres, leaving the Laser Tools Racing man to follow suit.
It would prove to be the right call as times tumbled late on, with Sutton saving his best until last as he secured the first pole of the new campaign, setting him up in the ideal position to start the defence of his title.

Thruxton thriller set to kickstart new BTCC campaign

The new British Touring Car Championship season kicks off this weekend at Thruxton, with a full grid of 29 cars ready to do battle on the quickest circuit on the calendar.
Although no fans will be in attendance – hopefully the final time that will be the case – there is set to be plenty of action for those watching live on ITV4 to enjoy after a busy winter that saw a raft of chances across the grid.
That is most notably true amongst the manufacturer-backed teams after the departure of Honda from the series, leaving Team Dynamics to run as an Independent outfit for the first time in more than a decade.

The Laser Tools Racing driver secured his second title at the wheel of the car last season, despite the team being able to conduct only limited testing across the year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Already this season, the team has been able to complete a number of days of running as it seeks to strengthen the package going into the season opener at Thruxton, with Sutton admitting that there had been improvements to make.
Expanded Speedworks programme headlines 2021 TBL list

BTCC organisers TOCA have revealed that all 29 TOCA BTCC Licences (TBLs) for 2021 have been allocated.
What should have been a 30 car field last year ultimately dropped down to 26 cars as a full season entry after Simpson Racing ended its programme, and both WSR and Power Maxed Racing were forced to amend plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With TOCA electing to retain the Simpson Racing licence, the remaining TBLs will all be used for the upcoming campaign in a 29 car entry that features a number of changes compared to 2020.
The headline news is that Speedworks will expand to a two-car programme having acquired a second TBL from AmD Tuning after it merged with Motorbase, with AmD’s second 2020 licence being added to the three already held by Motorbase for a new four-car programme.
