ICPD says homicide victim from last week was targeted

4/30/21 (updated 5/4/21) The Iowa City Police Department now says that the man who died in a shooting last week was targeted. Just after 8pm April 28 th,  officers responded to the 2400 Block of Lakeside Drive for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located 31-year-old Tommy Curry of Iowa City suffering from gunshot wounds. Curry was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and was later pronounced deceased. Based on initial information, including the preliminary autopsy result, the manner of death was listed as a homicide, with the cause of death being injuries sustained from gunshot wounds. Police are not saying if any suspects have been identified or if a weapon has been recovered.

Iowa City transient arrested for the second straight weekend

3/8/21 A local transient has been arrested for the second weekend in a row after refusing to leave Shelter House. 24-year-old Michael Pennell was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 5am Sunday on charges of Assault on Peace Officers, Interference with Official Acts and Trespassing and faces up to 14 months in jail if convicted. Arrest reports indicate that Pennell, who has been permanently trespassed from Shelter House, showed up there early Sunday morning and refused to leave. An officer on the scene pleaded with him to leave, but he continued to resist and was placed under arrest. Pennell allegedly refused to put his hands behind his back and kept trapping the officer’s hand under his arm and squeezing.

Coralville man allegedly confesses to arson and is arrested

02/02/21 A Coralville man faces a felony arson charge after police say he intentionally started a fire that sent one person to the hospital. According to Coralville Police, 36-year-old Dustin Corey is accused of intentionally starting a fire last summer at 900 21st Avenue Place. Firefighters were called to the scene around 7:30pm on July 20th for a structure fire. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin and roof area of the building, but other attached units sustained smoke and water damage. One person was taken to the hospital for evaluation due to smoke inhalation. A joint investigation by the Coralville Fire Department, Iowa State Fire Marshal Division and the Coralville Police Department determined the fire was likely arson and started in Apartment 908.
