Finalists for Owatonna Athlete of the Year
The Owatonna High School tradition of naming senior and junior athletes of the year will continue on Wednesday, May 26. The latest group of O Club members will also be recognized for their commitment to multiple sports. The 110% award winners, Triple-A and Excel Minnesota State High School League honors will also be highlighted.
The 12 athlete finalists include Big Nine Conference and Big Southeast champions, section finalists and section champions, and a state champ. Nearly all of the senior group of nominees have committed to play college sports, representing Division I, II and III athletics. The list includes a two pairs of sisters.

Former State Champ Named New Wrestling Coach at Owatonna
Derek Johnson won a pair of state individual wrestling titles (1999, 2000) while competing with Owatonna High School. He was a member of the 1998 state team championship. In 2019 Johnson was inducted into the OHS Athletic Hall of Fame for that illustrious grappling career. He is now the head coach for the Huskies.
Owatonna Activities Director Marc Achterkirch said in a news release, We are very pleased and excited to have Derek joining our coaching staff at Owatonna High School. Coach Johnson brings a tremendous amount of wrestling knowledge and experience to the position. Coach Johnson will be an excellent leader and role model to help develop great students on and off the mat.

The defending Section 1AAA Owatonna wrestlers couldn t make up for four forfeits despite winning five of the last six match-ups in Wednesday s section semifinals against Albert Lea at OHS. The sixth-seeded Tigers won the dual 38-33 over the second-seeded Huskies and advance to face top-seed Northfield Saturday at New Prague High School. The winner will then compete right away in the state quarterfinals against the Section 2AAA champ.
Albert Lea led 11-0 after the first two weights. Owatonna s Cael Robb and Jake Gronli won back-to-back matches to pull the Huskies within 11-8. But a pin followed by three forfeits left OHS behind 35-8.
