The event organized by the Latino American Political Association (LAPA), Albondigas of South County, and the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was held at a Cuban restaurant in San Diego. Former San Diego City Councilmember, Ed Harris and San Diego Mayor, Kevin L. Faulconer, both candidates on the ballot for City of San Diego mayor, attended the event. Lori Saldaña, mayoral candidate and former California State Assembly member, was not present at the event.

Zero Tolerance for Illegal Border Crossings

By Ana Gomez Salcido U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new zero tolerance policy for illegal border crossings, during a visit to San Diego, on Monday, May 7. “Today we are here to send a message to the world: we are not going to let this country be overwhelmed. People are not going to caravan or otherwise stampede our border. We need legality and integrity in the immigration system,” Sessions said during a press conference at the Border Field State Park, next to the border with Tijuana. According to Sessions, the Department of Homeland Security will now refer 100 percent of illegal Southwest border crossings to the Department of Justice for prosecution.

Chicano Federation Celebrates Annual Unity Luncheon By Ana Gomez Salcido The Chicano Federation of San Diego County celebrated 47 years of community engagement and service today, Friday, May 6 with its annual Unity Luncheon hosted at Downtown’s Wyndham San Diego Bayside. Established in 1969, the Chicano Federation of San Diego County started as a social movement against discrimination to the Chicano community in San Diego, but has evolved to a service organization providing aid to all families in San Diego County, regardless of their background. President and CEO of Chicano Federation for over 20 years, Raymond Uzeta, said today’s Unity Luncheon is the organization’s most important fundraising event of the year, and it was celebrated successfully.
