Review | Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong movie review: Louis Koo, Francis Ng in yet another police corruption drama by Wong Jing
Fictional tale about the early days of Hong Kong’s anti-corruption agency and its fight to reel in a drug dealer and his corrupt police ally is enjoyable
Tony Leung Ka-fai and Francis Ng are understated as the two criminals in a deftly crafted narrative that shows Wong knows how to satisfy China’s censors

An ultimately dubious exercise in genre-mandated misogyny is given a glossy finish with inspired action and slick, b/w photography.

Oh great, another movie about dead girls and the grizzled cop/greenhorn cop duo tracking their killer. At least “Limbo,” from Soi Cheang (the “Monkey King” franchise) looks slick often literally, with photogenic rain showers making its trashed Hong Kong slum locations as reflective as silver. The monochrome gloss smoothes over the joints between chunks of narrative and stock characters that seem lifted wholesale from other cop thrillers, though the genre’s fondness for torturing women to motivate men remains sadly
