MUSKEGON, MI – Muskegon is expecting the return of a packed summer festival season after most major events were canceled last year due to COVID-19.
Visit Muskegon Community Development Director Bob Lukens said they are looking forward to a good summer with at least 10 festivals scheduled that bring thousands of people to the area.
“We’ll have to see how everything goes with the state’s capacity limits, but as of now, people are getting vaccinated and that really helps,” Lukens said.

Muskegon July 4 fireworks show canceled due to ‘unknowns’ of COVID-19
Updated Mar 10, 2021;
MUSKEGON, MI – For the second summer in a row, the city of Muskegon will not have a public Fourth of July fireworks display.
The Muskegon RockStock Music Festival provides the annual fireworks show, and organizers canceled the 20,000-person event due to concerns about COVID-19.
“We didn’t take it lightly,” said Brandon Baskin, a festival organizer with B. Baskin Enterprises. “It was a really hard decision. This is our baby.”
Rockstock started in 2008 as a one-day event featuring local bands at Hackley Park. It grew into three days of concerts, a weeklong carnival and the July 4 fireworks held at Heritage Landing.

The operations of the Lakeshore Art Festival now will be managed by the city of Muskegon’s Downtown Development Authority.
“Having the DDA house the Lakeshore Art Festival seemed like a natural fit and good addition to our city events department,” said Ann Meisch, city of Muskegon clerk. “The festival has been a great success and has provided a significant positive impact on our downtown businesses and residents.”
The festival, which was overseen by the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, will be moved from the first weekend in July to the last weekend of June for 2021, June 26-27. The dates coincide with the Mercy Health Seaway Run, and both events will be working collaboratively.
