For years, the Harris School, the Lake Park School, and the Harris-Lake Park Community School District have benefited from community support in the form of passed school bonds. Lois and Forrest Elder welcomed their family to their rural Lake Park home on Sunday, Sept. 10, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their 1953 wedding in Tracy, Minnesota.
The Harris-Lake Park School board voted unanimously Monday night to place an $18.6 million bond issue on the local ballot this November.
The board had previously voted to take the general obligation bond issue to the polls this September, but H-LP Superintendent Gary Richardson said some changes at the state level prompted the district to push the date back to Nov. 7.
Donald Harris Steen Nord, aka Don and Donnie, was born on April 5, 1929, on the farm his grandfather homesteaded in 1876 near Hawley, Minnesota. He died peacefully at the Sanford Medical Center on March 1, 2023. He leaves a legacy of faith, humor, storytelling, farming and business expertise, music, kindness, and loving care for others.
The United Way of Becker County's annual "Celebration of Heroes" on Thursday, April 28 recognized Detroit Lakes student Hannah Barberg and Frazee-Vergas teacher Molly Fairbanks as "Everyday Heroes," county museum director Becky Mitchell and Meadowland Surveying's Scott and Tiffiny Walz for their "Community Spirit," and Midwest Bank's Jessica Burhans for her "commitment to community, compassion and service combined with extraordinary leadership," as the recipient of this year's Bob and Michelle Harris Award.
