Every year, diminutive yellow or white or purple flowers appear in late February and early March, often piercing dead leaves and pushing defiantly through a layer of snow. They’re rewarded with the kiss of the sun and smiles from those of us who anxiously await their debut. The crocus is that harbinger of spring which is just as welcome as the familiar call of the red-winged blackbird. Mine made their appearance just last week, a little later than normal, but they’ve now set in motion the ushering in of a new season. And you’d better pay attention, because before you know it they’ll be gone, and just as winter slowly dragged on, spring will be rushing into summer, way too fast for our liking.
